Feel the Beat explores how photographers have captured dance since the early 20th century, examining the tension between motion and stillness. Drawn from SFMOMA's permanent collection, the exhibition traces three approaches: Anna Halprin's experimental postwar choreography, the collaboration between trained dancers and photographers exemplified by Eikoh Hosoe's Kamaitachi series with Butoh founder Tatsumi Hijikata, and Malick Sidibé's Mali Twist documenting amateur dancers in social spaces. The works position photographers as active participants rather than detached observers in rendering rhythm and movement.
